WEWS News Channel 5: Rocky River company sees bike sales take off as gas prices soar

March 21, 2012

ROCKY RIVER - Century Cycles located on Detroit Road in Rocky River is marking its 20th year in business with a banner year in the sales of bikes, merchandise and repair work.

Owner Scott Cowan said if he gets a 5 percent in increase in sales, he is happy and what a difference year makes.

Since March of last year, he has seen his sales jump literally more than 100 percent. He definitely attributes the rise in bike sales to the ever soaring gas prices. People are just trying to save money.

When Cowan opened up his business he said it was mostly for the casual biker. Since then, people are more in tune with their bodies and are more into exercising. Back then, the selection of bikes was not as large. Now, bikes range from a few hundred dollars to into the thousands for the more hardcore riders.

Starting Thursday through the weekend is their annual spring sale.
