Century Cycles Holiday Sale features Crazy Christmas Sweater Saturdays on December 5, December 12 and December 19 with free gifts

Century Cycles online poll reveals most bicyclists prefer to receive gift cards

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (December 4, 2009) - Ugly Christmas sweaters are inspiring everything from parties to their own online stores. Now they have inspired a local retailer.

For Crazy Christmas Sweater Saturdays, Century Cycles employees in Medina, Peninsula and Rocky River will be pulling their craziest and ugliest Christmas sweaters out of mothballs each Saturday in December. They invite others to make this holiday fashion (mis)statement with them and will reward them if they do.

Simply wear an ugly Christmas sweater into any Century Cycles store on December 5, December 12, or December 19 and receive a special holiday gift, free with any $10 purchase. Customers will have their choice of two gifts, one just for coffee drinkers (a mug with Century Cycles' "Define your life. Ride a bike.TM" slogan on it, along with a packet of 53x11 Coffee) and the other is for beer drinkers (a pint glass with Century Cycles' slogan, plus a bottle of Great Lakes Brewing Company's Christmas Ale).

"It's our way of saying merry Christmas and thanks for another great year," said Scott Cowan, owner of Century Cycles. "What better way is there than encouraging people to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters out in public and then giving them a gift to toast the season?"

In addition to this special Saturday promotion, Century Cycles has a Holiday Sale now through December 31, 2009. All bicycles are 10% off and all bicycling clothing and accessories are 20% off. Don't know where to hide a gift bike? Century Cycles will hide it - each store provides free gift bike storage until December 24 at 3 p.m., as well as free bicycle delivery in their market areas.

Gifts Cyclists Prefer

In a recent online poll, Century Cycles asked bicyclists what cycling gift they wanted to receive from Santa. A Century Cycles gift card was preferred by 31% of the respondents, who wanted to shop for themselves. It was followed by winter cycling clothing and accessories (23%), a new bicycle (21%), upgraded components for their bicycle (15%), and spring cycling clothing and accessories (10%).

Bicycling is one of America's favorite forms of outdoor recreation and is on an upswing - making bicycles and bicycling accessories ideal gifts during the holidays. Recent research by The Outdoor Foundation found that bicycling is the second favorite activity among Americans age 6 and older, behind running/jogging. National Sporting Goods Association research reveals that 44.7 million people age 7 and older rode a bicycle more than six times in 2008, up 11% over the previous year.
