Century Cycles wins 2018 Gold Commuter Choice Award
CLEVELAND (Thursday, September 27, 2018) — At the 2018 Sustainable Cleveland Summit, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) and partners presented the Gold Commuter Choice Award to Century Cycles for their support of sustainable transportation options for their employees. This year, 29 organizations with more than 95,000 employees participated in the Awards.
NOACA, along with Sustainable Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA), presents the Commuter Choice Awards to recognize Northeast Ohio organizations that promote environmentally friendly commute options like transit, carpooling, bicycling, walking and telecommuting.
NOACA encouraged Commuter Choice Award participants to boost their scores by creating a subsite on Gohio Commute – Northeast Ohio’s premier ride planning, matching, and logging tool – and participating in the “NEO Clean Air Challenge.” Participating organizations:
- Logged 4,373 alternative commutes
- Saved $12,500 in commuting costs
- Burned 432,243 calories biking & walking to work
- Saved 12 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
Century Cycles has been serving Northeast Ohio bicyclists and their families since 1992. They are a locally-owned, full-service bicycle shop, open year-round with bike sales, repairs, and rentals, and a wide selection of clothing, accessories, and parts. Century Cycles is a certified Bicycle Friendly Business through the League of American Bicyclists and offers employees discounts to purchase bikes, bike parts, and other accessories.
"We are honored to join some of Cleveland's most progressive organizations in leading the charge towards a more sustainable transportation network," said Kevin Madzia, Century Cycles Bicycle Fit Specialist & Information Technology Manager. "Biking to work is part of a healthy lifestyle, and everyone benefits with reduced congestion and pollution. We thank NOACA and their partners for their support, and thanks to our staff for making it happen!"
All winners of the 2018 Commuter Choice Awards include:
- Gold: Century Cycles
- Silver: Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Case Western Reserve University
- Bronze: University Circle, Inc.; Cleveland Foundation; Cleveland Clinic; Rathbone Group, LLC; and Thompson Hine, LLC.
"We are very pleased that the Commuter Choice Awards and Gohio Commute platform continue to grow," said NOACA Executive Director Grace Gallucci. "Alternative commuting – even if it’s only once a week – can improve employee wellness, productivity, and retention. It also benefits employers by generating savings through tax benefits, lease costs, and reduced parking demand."
Examples of award winning actions that encourage employees to use alternative transportation include:
- Providing free or subsidized transit passes to employees
- Offering secure outdoor and indoor parking for bicycles
- Providing showers, changing areas, and lockers for bicyclists and pedestrians
- Allowing employees to telecommute and have flexible work schedules
NOACA encourages all employers in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain and Medina counties to apply for a Commuter Choice Award in 2019.
